Overview
Remove a saved credit card or E-Check payment method when the customer asks you to delete their stored payment information or the payment method is no longer valid.
Available on all plans with a connected payment gateway. Needs the Refund or delete payment permission enabled.
Note: Removing a saved card or E-Check removes it from the customer's record everywhere it appears, including every opportunity, not just the place you remove it from.
How To Remove a Saved Card from an Opportunity
Open the opportunity and select the Estimate tab.
In the Payments panel, select the Cards tab.
Click the menu icon on the card you want to remove.
Select Remove card.
Click Remove card in the Remove this card from file? window.
The card is removed and a "Card removed" confirmation message appears. The card no longer appears as a saved option when taking payments.
Note: If the card is tagged for pre-authorization, the removal window warns you that removing it turns Auto Pre-authorize off for the opportunity until another card is selected.
How To Remove a Saved Card or E-Check from the Customer Profile
Saved E-Check payment methods can only be removed from the customer profile.
Open the customer's profile from the Customers page or an opportunity.
Scroll to the Payment section.
Find the card or E-Check you want to remove.
Click the trash icon on the payment method.
Confirm the removal in the Delete stored payment method? dialog.
The payment method is removed from the customer's profile immediately.
Note: Removing a saved payment method cannot be undone. Payments already processed with that card or E-Check are not affected.
What Happens When You Remove a Saved Payment Method
Removing a saved payment method affects more than the surface you remove it from. When you remove one:
The payment method no longer appears in the saved payment options on any of the customer's opportunities.
If the card was set as the default payment method on an opportunity, that selection is cleared. A note is added to the opportunity's activity log.
If the card was tagged for pre-authorization on an opportunity, that selection is cleared. A note is added to the opportunity's activity log.
If it was the customer's last usable saved card, auto pre-authorize is turned off on all of the customer's opportunities so scheduled pre-authorizations do not fail. A note is added to each affected opportunity's activity log.
Can a Removed Card Be Saved Again?
Yes. Removing a saved card does not block that card from being stored in the future. If the customer pays with the same card again, the card is saved to their profile again automatically when your gateway account is set to store all cards, which is the default with Remedy Payments.
To make card storage an optional, per-transaction choice instead, contact Remedy Payments and ask them to change this at the account level. This setting is controlled by the merchant and is not managed in your SmartMoving settings.
FAQs
Can the customer remove their own saved payment method?
No. Saved payment methods can only be removed by your team in the SmartMoving web app. If a customer asks to have their card removed, remove it from an opportunity's Cards tab or from their customer profile using the steps in this article.
Why did a card I removed reappear on the customer's profile?
The customer made a new payment with that card after you removed it. When your gateway account is set to store all cards, any card used for a payment is saved automatically, including a card that was previously removed.
Does removing a storage account's default payment remove the saved card?
No. Removing the default payment method on a storage account only clears which saved payment method the account charges by default. The card itself remains on the customer's profile until you remove it there.
