When you update the tariff on an existing opportunity, or rerate the opportunity using a different tariff, SmartMoving updates the job’s pricing, materials, and carrier packs based on the new tariff. This article explains how this process works, what is supported, and what to watch out for.

What Is Rerating?

Rerating is the process of recalculating an opportunity using a different tariff. You may rerate an opportunity when:

  • You duplicate an estimate and want to compare tariffs

  • A job switches branches (each with different tariffs)

  • You updated or corrected tariff settings

  • You want to apply a different pricing model mid-way through the estimate

When rerating, SmartMoving must realign Materials and Carrier Packs from the original tariff to the new one.

How Materials Migrate When You Change Tariffs

When rerating between unmanaged (user-configured) tariffs, SmartMoving will automatically:

  1. Match materials by name

  2. Transfer quantities from the original tariff’s materials to the new tariff’s equivalent

  3. Recalculate totals using the new tariff’s rates

  4. Prevent duplicate materials appearing in Job Materials or Pack by Container

This ensures a smoother and more predictable experience when switching between tariffs with similar structures.

When Material Migration Works (Successful Scenarios)

Material migration succeeds when:

  • You are switching between unmanaged tariffs

  • Both tariffs include the same materials with identical names

  • The underlying carrier pack or material list is aligned

Example:
Tariff A and Tariff B both contain:

  • Dish Box

  • Large Box

  • Mattress Bag

  • Carrier Pack – Wardrobe

If you rerate between these tariffs, SmartMoving will carry over the quantities correctly.

Scenarios That Still Cause Sync Issues

You may continue to see an Inventory Out of Sync or mismatched items if:

  • The new tariff does not include the same materials

  • Material names differ even slightly

    • Example: “Dish Box” vs. “Dish Pack Box”

  • You rerate to or from a managed tariff

  • The opportunity includes items not present in the new tariff

In these cases, SmartMoving cannot match items by name and will flag the mismatch.

Behavior With Managed Tariffs

Material migration currently applies only to unmanaged tariffs.
Managed tariffs, including the SM-100 managed tariff, continue to behave as before:

  • Materials are not automatically migrated

  • Rerating may require manual review and correction

  • Out-of-sync messages may appear

If your workflow frequently involves switching between managed and unmanaged tariffs, be prepared to manually update materials after rerating.

What “Inventory Out of Sync” Means

You’ll see this banner when the inventory or materials on the opportunity do not match the materials available on the new tariff.

This happens when SmartMoving cannot align materials or carrier packs from the old tariff with those on the new one.

You should review and adjust materials to ensure the estimate is accurate.

Best Practices for Rerating Opportunities

To avoid errors or mismatches:

  • Keep materials consistent across tariffs

    • Use identical names when building multiple unmanaged tariffs.

  • Only rerate between tariffs that share the same material list

    • This ensures automatic migration succeeds.

  • Review materials anytime the destination tariff differs

    • Especially when switching from or to a managed tariff.

  • Duplicate opportunities before rerating for compariso

    • This preserves the original and avoids accidental data loss.
