The SmartMoving platform allows crew members to sell valuation coverage directly through the Crew App. However, to ensure controlled access, only users with the "Can add valuation charges" permission can utilize this functionality.

This article will guide you through enabling valuation, understanding how it works, and configuring the necessary settings.

Enabling Valuation in the Crew App

Valuation Coverage: Driving Profitability and Reducing Claims

The valuation feature in SmartMoving provides flexibility and control over how moving companies offer and process valuation coverage.

This feature helps moving companies generate additional revenue by allowing crew members to sell valuation coverage directly from their app on move day. This provides one last opportunity to offer enhanced protection before the job begins. Additionally, selling valuation can lead to a reduction in claims, benefiting both the company and the shipper.

Key Setup Steps:

With a dual-layer activation that ensures an extra level of control, companies must first enable the feature, and then users with the correct permissions can toggle it on in their settings.

  1. Enable Valuation in Settings

    1. Navigate to Settings > Crew App > General Settings (or click here)

    2. Toggle ON "Crew can add valuation to a job".

  2. Check Valuation Templates

    1. Checkmark which valuation templates should be available in the Crew App for crew members to upsell.

  3. Configure or Edit Valuation Templates (if necessary)

    1. Navigate to Settings > Tariffs > Valuation Templates (or click here)

    2. Ensure the correct valuation options are set up for your company’s needs.

    3. Update valuation descriptions: This is where you can modify the descriptions that will be visible to crew members in the Crew App, ensuring clear and accurate messaging for shippers. More info on this here.

Refer to this article for further guidance on configuring Valuation Templates.

  4. Assign Valuation Permissions

    1. Navigate to Settings > Crew App > Crew App Permissions or click here

    2. Grant the "Can Add Valuation Charges" permission to user roles that need access to this feature.

Collecting Valuation Payments

Decide whether valuation charges must be paid immediately or added to the final bill.

  • Option 1 (Toggle ON): Pay Immediately – Require the customer to pay for valuation coverage at the time of selection.

    • Configure payment preferences per job type and branch as needed.

  • Option 2 (Toggle OFF): Add to Final Bill – Include valuation charges in the final invoice and collect payment at the end of the job.

Crew App Valuation Workflow

When a crew member accesses valuation options in the Crew App, they are presented with a coverage selection screen. This allows them to:

  • Present, review, and sell the valuation coverage options in a clean, user-friendly format to help the shipper make an informed decision.

  • Viewing and Upselling a Valuation Option

    • If a coverage option has been selected prior to move day, the crew can see that information in their application.

    • If Released Value Protection has been selected, the crew member will have the opportunity to upsell the shipper to a different coverage option.

  • Adjust the declared value

    • If the shipper wants to increase the declared value of their shipment, they can do so through the application. However, increasing the declared value does not automatically change their coverage level. If they wish to adjust their coverage option, the crew can assist in selecting a different protection plan.

  • Modify deductibles, with updates automatically reflected in the payment calculations.

Educational Icon in the Crew App

An educational toggle within the Crew App provides a simple overview of why valuation coverage is important.

Note: Future updates may include the ability for companies to customize this section with their own educational content or videos.

Highlighting a Recommended Coverage Option

To help guide shippers toward the most appropriate valuation coverage—and increase profitability—SmartMoving allows companies to mark a specific coverage option as “Recommended.”

This feature adds a visual Recommended badge next to the selected coverage option in the Crew App, drawing the shipper’s attention during the selection process. This improves the presentation and clarity of options, making it easier for crew members to upsell the best-fit coverage plan.

How to Configure the Recommended Badge

  1. Navigate to Settings > Crew App > General Settings.

  2. Scroll to the Valuation section.

  3. Toggle ON the Show a valuation template as "Recommended".

  4. Select which valuation template should display the badge as the recommended option.

  5. Save Changes.

Only one coverage option can be marked as recommended at a time. This selection is reflected in the Crew App during the valuation presentation process.

This simple visual cue not only improves user experience but also helps steer conversations toward higher-value coverage options that align with your company’s goals.

Customization of Valuation Language

SmartMoving allows companies to customize the language displayed on valuation coverage cards in the Crew App. This ensures that descriptions align with company-specific messaging and allows customers to include any tariff-specific information required for a coverage option.

  1. Navigate to Tariff Valuation Templates in the web app.

  2. Click Edit to modify the default descriptions.

  3. Customize text to better communicate the valuation options to customers.

While default language is provided, companies have full control over how valuation coverage is presented to their customers.
