You can configure SmartMoving to apply credit card processing fees to storage payments made by customers. This helps offset transaction costs, especially for recurring storage billing.

Because credit card surcharges are regulated differently across states, SmartMoving allows you to enable fees at the warehouse level, giving you flexibility and compliance control.

Prerequisite: Confirm Warehouse Settings Are Configured

Before you can enable credit card fees for storage payments, your warehouses must already be set up in the Storage module.

Make sure you have:

  • Warehouses created

  • Warehouse billing settings configured

  • Storage payments enabled

If warehouse settings are incomplete, the storage credit card fee options will not be available.

Step-by-Step: Enable Credit Card Fees for Storage

1. Navigate to Storage Credit Card Fee Settings

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Select Accounting

  3. Click Credit Card Fees

2. Enable Credit Card Fees for Storage

At the top of the page, toggle on: Credit Card Fees for Storage

This activates fee settings specifically for storage-related customer payments.

3. Enable Fees Per Warehouse

Once storage fees are enabled, you can turn on fees individually for each warehouse.

In the warehouse list:

  • Toggle on Enable Fee for each warehouse where you want the credit card fee applied

💡 This is especially useful for companies operating in multiple states, where surcharge laws may vary by location.

4. Customize Fee Labels and Percentages

For each warehouse with fees enabled, you must configure the following fields:

a) Fee Label

This label appears on customer-facing documents such as invoices and the Customer Portal.

Common examples include:

  • Processing Fee

  • Credit Card Fee

  • Convenience Fee

  • Transaction Fee

b) Fee Percentage

Enter the percentage you want to charge for credit card transactions. Typical rates range from 2.5%–3.5%.

5. Optional: Apply Sales Tax to Storage Credit Card Fees

If your business is required to apply sales tax to credit card fees, SmartMoving provides an additional option.

To enable this:

  • Check the box in the Sales Tax Fee column for the warehouse

When enabled, SmartMoving will automatically calculate sales tax on the processing fee based on the warehouse’s configured tax rate.

⚠️ Sales tax rules vary by state. Consult your tax professional to confirm whether this applies to your storage operations.

6. Save Requirements

To successfully save storage credit card fee settings:

  • Each enabled warehouse must include both:

    • A fee label

    • A fee percentage

If either field is missing, SmartMoving will not allow you to save changes.

Click Save Changes once all warehouse settings are complete.

Next Steps

Once configured, storage credit card fees will appear automatically in:

  • Customer invoices

  • Customer Portal payments

  • Storage billing transactions
