Viewing Inventory Tags in the Storage Portal

Learn how customers see inventory tags on their stored items in the SmartMoving Storage Portal, where tags appear in list and gallery views, and how the first three tags display with a plus-more badge.

Overview

Inventory tags label and organize items in a storage account. When the moving company assigns tags to an item, those tags appear on the item in the SmartMoving Storage Portal as small pill badges showing each tag name. This gives customers a quick view of how their stored items are categorized.

Inventory tags in the Storage Portal are for viewing only. Customers can see tags on their stored items but cannot add, edit, or remove them.

Before You Start

  • Inventory tags in the Storage Portal are available to accounts using SmartMoving Storage. Requires admin role to create and manage inventory tags.

  • Customers do not need any special permission to view inventory tags in the Storage Portal.

Where Inventory Tags Appear in the Storage Portal

Inventory tags appear on stored items in both views of the SmartMoving Storage Portal:

  • List view: tags appear in a dedicated Tags column.

  • Gallery view: tags appear on the item card, below the item details.

An item with no tags assigned shows no tag pills in either the list view or the gallery view.

How Many Inventory Tags Display in the Storage Portal

Each item in the SmartMoving Storage Portal shows the first 3 inventory tags as pill badges. If an item has more than 3 tags:

  • The first 3 tags appear as pills.

  • The remaining tags collapse into a +[number] more badge. For example, an item with 5 tags shows 3 pills and a +2 more badge.

  • Hovering over the +[number] more badge lists the remaining tag names.

If a tag has a description, hovering over the tag pill shows that description.

šŸ’” SmartTip: Long tag names are shortened to fit the list column and the gallery card. Keep tag names short so customers can read them at a glance.

Managing Inventory Tags for the Storage Portal

Customers cannot change inventory tags from the Storage Portal. Inventory tags are created and managed by office staff on the Inventory Tags settings page. When office staff add or remove a tag on an item, the change appears in the Storage Portal the next time the customer loads the item.

Because customers see tag names in the Storage Portal, an informational note reading "Tag names are visible to customers on the storage portal" appears on the Inventory Tags settings page and in the Add Inventory Tag and Edit Inventory Tag slideouts.

Best Practices

  • Keep inventory tag names short and clear, since customers see them in the Storage Portal and long names are shortened to fit. Tag names can be up to 30 characters.

  • Assign the most useful tags first, since only the first 3 tags show before the +[number] more badge.

  • Add a description to an inventory tag to give customers extra context when they hover over the tag pill.

  • Review tag names for anything you would not want a customer to see, since inventory tag names are visible in the Storage Portal.

Troubleshooting

A customer does not see an inventory tag you assigned. The Storage Portal shows tag changes the next time the customer loads the item. Ask the customer to refresh or reopen the item, and confirm the tag is assigned to that item in the storage account's inventory.

An inventory tag name looks cut off in the Storage Portal. Long tag names are shortened to fit the list column and the gallery card. Shorten the tag name on the Inventory Tags settings page.

A customer wants to change an inventory tag. Inventory tags are read-only in the Storage Portal. Office staff update tag names and descriptions on the Inventory Tags settings page and change which tags an item has from the storage account's inventory.
