Removing Items from Containers in Storage Account Inventory

Learn how to unassign one or more items from their containers in a storage account inventory while keeping the item's zone and location unchanged.

Written by Michelle Carone

Overview

You can remove inventory items from their assigned containers directly in the storage account inventory. This is useful when you need to reorganize the contents of a container without changing where each item lives in your warehouse. The item's zone and location stay the same; only the container assignment is cleared.

You can remove items one at a time from the row or card menu, or remove several at once using bulk selection.

Before You Start

Available to accounts using SmartMoving Storage. Requires admin role.

  • The action is only available for items that are currently assigned to a container. Items without a container do not show the Remove from container option.

  • Removing items can affect container counts on the storage account and may prompt you to remove an empty container when a container becomes empty.

How To Do It

Remove a Single Item from Its Container

  1. Open the storage account and go to the Inventory tab.

  2. Find the item you want to unassign in either the list view or the gallery view.

  3. Click the kebab menu on the item's row or card.

  4. Select Remove from container.

  5. In the Remove item from container? confirmation, review the item name and the container it will be unassigned from.

  6. Click Remove from Container. The container clears on that row, a toast displays Item removed from container., and the item's activity log records the change.

Remove Multiple Items from Their Containers at Once

  1. Open the storage account and go to the Inventory tab.

  2. Select the checkbox on each item you want to unassign. The action bar appears at the top of the inventory list as soon as at least one selected item is in a container.

  3. Click Remove from Container in the action bar.

  4. In the Remove items from containers? confirmation, review the number of items that will be unassigned.

  5. Click Remove from Containers. The containers clear on each affected row and each item's activity log records the change.

Best Practices

  • The item's zone and location stay the same when you unassign it. Only the container assignment is cleared, so update the zone or location separately if you also need to change them.

  • The bulk action runs on container-assigned items only. The Remove from Container button appears as long as one selected item is in a container, the confirmation count reflects only the items being unassigned, and items without a container are ignored.

  • Empty containers are handled based on your storage pricing setup. When unassigning items leaves a container empty:

    • If your storage pricing is set up per container, you are prompted with Remove empty container?. The prompt lists each container and notes that removal will change the cost on the next invoice. Click Yes, remove container (or Yes, remove containers) to remove them, or close the prompt to keep the empty containers on the account.

    • If your storage pricing is not set up per container, empty containers are removed automatically and no prompt appears.

  • Each unassign creates an activity log entry on the item that reads "{Item name} was unassigned from {Container Type} {Container Number}." Open the item details to review its history.

  • Container item counts and the totals in the account's Storage Utilization section refresh once the unassign completes.

Troubleshooting

The Remove from container option is missing from the kebab menu. The item is not currently assigned to a container. Assign it to a container first, then the option appears.

The REMOVE FROM CONTAINER bulk button is missing. None of the items you selected are in a container. Select at least one item that has a container assigned.

An empty container prompt appeared and you did not expect it. Your account uses container-based storage pricing, so removing the last item from a container offers to remove the container itself to keep your invoice accurate. Close the prompt if you want to keep the empty container on the account.
