Assigning Inventory Items to Containers and Updating Container Locations

Learn how to assign one or more inventory items to a container from the storage account Inventory tab and optionally update the container's location in the same step.

Written by Michelle Carone

Overview

The Inventory tab in a storage account lets you assign items to containers in bulk. When assigning items, you can also update the container's location at the same time. All assignments and location changes are recorded in the activity logs.

Before You Start

Available to accounts using SmartMoving Storage. Requires admin role (typically owners).

If you don't see this option, contact SmartMoving Support.

How To Do It

  1. Open a storage account and select the Inventory tab.

  2. Check the box next to one or more items you want to assign.

  3. In the bulk action bar, click Add to Container.

  4. Select the container you want to assign the items to.

    • If the container already has items assigned to it, a warning message appears. Review it and continue if needed.

    • If an item is already assigned to the selected container, a message tells you the item is already there.

  5. To update the container's location, toggle on Update container location and fill in the applicable fields: Aisle, Row, Shelf, Warehouse, and Zone.

  6. Click Add to complete the assignment. The items are assigned to the container, the container's location updates if you toggled it on, and the activity logs update automatically.

šŸ’” SmartTip: You can assign a single item or multiple items to a container in one action. Select all applicable items before clicking Adding to Container.

Key Details

  • Each assignment creates an entry in the item's activity log: "[Item name] assigned to [container type] [container number]."

  • Location changes are recorded in the storage account activity log: "[Container type] [Container number]'s location was updated from [old location] to [new location]."

  • Location changes also appear on the Containers tab and in the container's location history.

  • To mark items as oversized from the bulk action bar, see Marking Inventory Items as Oversized.

  • To move items out of storage from the Inventory tab, see Creating an Outbound Opportunity from Storage Inventory.
