Moving an Item from One Container to Another

Reassign one or more storage inventory items to a different container and optionally update the container's location.

Written by Michelle Carone

Overview

If a stored item needs to be moved to a different container, reassign it from the Inventory tab on a storage account. This article focuses on the reassignment workflow specifically. For foundational container assignment (assigning items to a container for the first time, modal field details, and the location toggle), see Assigning Inventory Items to Containers and Updating Container Locations.

You can move a single item or select multiple items to reassign them in bulk. The Assign Container modal shows a summary of which items are being added, which are being moved from another container, and which are already in the target container.

Before You Start

Available to accounts using SmartMoving Storage.

  • You need to be an admin with access to the storage module in SmartMoving.

  • The target container must already exist in your warehouse. You cannot create a new container during this process.

  • To update a container's location during the move, you need access to Storage Settings or Settings.

How To Do It

  1. Navigate to the storage account and open the Inventory tab.

  2. Select the checkbox next to one or more items currently assigned to a container.

  3. In the action bar above the list, click Add to Container. The Assign Container modal opens.

  4. Select the target container from the dropdown.

  5. Review the summary. The modal lists items being added, items being moved from their current container, and items already in the target container. The message "Any items already in a container will be moved" confirms that the selected items will be transferred from their current containers.

  6. To update the target container's location at the same time, enable the Update container location toggle before clicking Assign. See Assigning Inventory Items to Containers and Updating Container Locations for the location fields and permission requirements.

  7. Click Assign. The items are reassigned to the selected container and the inventory list refreshes.

Each reassignment is recorded in the activity log for each item: "[Item name] assigned to [Container type] [Container number]." If you also update the container's location, the activity log records: "[Container type] [Container number]'s location was updated from [old location] to [new location]."

Best Practices

  • Review the summary section in the Assign Container modal before clicking Assign. It tells you exactly which items are being moved or are already in the target container, which helps prevent accidental reassignments.

  • When reorganizing a warehouse and moving items across multiple containers, update the container location during reassignment to keep location data accurate in one step.

  • Items do not need to be removed from their current container before moving. The Add to Container action handles the transfer automatically.

Troubleshooting

The Add to Container button is not available. This button appears in the action bar after you select one or more items using the checkboxes. Make sure at least one item is selected.

An item shows as "already in Container X" in the summary. That item is already assigned to the container you selected. It will not be moved. If you expected it to move, verify you selected the correct target container.

The container I need is not in the dropdown. The dropdown only shows containers that already exist in your warehouse. Create the container in your warehouse settings first, then return to this step.

I don't see the option to update container location. Updating the location during a move requires access to Storage Settings or Settings. If you don't see this option, contact SmartMoving Support.
